Ugh

Our upstairs toilet is broken, Nate is sick. No fun.

We tried to fix the toilet and were halfway successful. We got the flush valve out of the toilet, but the new flush valve is too tall, so we need to saw it shorter with our non-existent saw. Good thing we have another toilet, though, if I could choose, the downstairs one would be the broken one. It's cold in that bathroom anyway.

Poor Nate. Please pray he's better by tomorrow morning.

I'm off to get a bit of sleep.

May the peace of Christ dwell in your hearts this day...Merry Christmas from Nathan, Tricia, Rebecca, and Alexandra!

Note: Christmas photo and letter will be in the mail before the new year...I hope. :)

Our evening of opening gifts (From a few weeks ago)

Nate got a book from me and a book from the girls. I also gave him a pair of jeans, but he got those a month earlier than this night.

Becca and Ally opened a gift from Nate's aunt and uncle: a cute little people type playhouse and school bus.

This picture is worth posting again because I think it's cute that they insisted on wearing the backpacks. Becca has already finished a whole sketch pad. I think I might have to start buying them in bulk.

We also gave the girls new pjs from Hanna Anderson. They are so nice. I want a pair. :) I got them on sale for half off a few months ago.

And what did I get, you ask? The girls and Nate gave me a card...and inside the card it said I could schedule a massage for myself and Nate would stay home with the girls while I went. I've been hinting (very obviously) for this kind of gift for a couple of years now. I was quite excited.
Backpacks and picture envelopes

A photo of the backpacks I made for the girls to hold their sketch pads and crayon rolls

For each of our grandmas I ordered about 40 various photos from our year from Shutterfly and made these picture envelopes to hold them.

New dining room table

I promised my mom I'd post pictures of our new table tonight.

First, to compare, here is our old table (now up in my sewing studio--aka guest room--as my cutting table) which has served us well since my parents' bought it for us three years ago.

Two views of the new table...you can see the dining room curtains in one of them.

It's seven feet long and three and a half feet wide...huge! The benches are six feet long. We felt like we were missing people at dinner. :) It's made with Red Oak with an English Chestnut colored stain. Our friend's brother and dad custom-made it for us and he did a fabulous job. It's really beautiful work.
Curtains

Last night and this afternoon I turned two white twin sheets into curtains for four of our windows: three in the dining room and one on the stairway. The stairway one looks like a giant's pillowcase, but it works.

The three dining room ones look a little less like pillow cases, but they ended up being just a little too short. Argh. I'm notoriously bad at measuring. I think I'll turn them into cafe curtains sometime in January. I'll have Nate help me measure. :)

I used tension rods on all four windows. On all four windows I spent a total of $33 for curtains and hardware. I got the tension rods at Target ($5 a piece) and one of the twin sheets at Target ($9). I got the other flat twin sheet at Goodwill for $3.

No picture of the dining room curtains yet.
It's alive!

Proof that I can keep a plant alive for more than a month. I've had this Pothos since August and I barely pay attention to it.

Girl's closet and room

I've been working a little bit on the girl's closet. It's the largest one in the house and even has a window in it. I have a dress up area in there for them. I added a mirror and a shower curtain tension rod to hang tutus and such on to the dress-up area. On the other side I just cleared a bunch of stuff out so it's less cluttered. It's a work in progress, but it works for now.

My attempt at an overview of the dress up area.

Ally looking in the new mirror.

The less exciting other side has Nate and my dress/Sunday clothes, storage tubs with clothes Ally will fit into soon, and Ally's clothes on a bookshelf.

I also hung up a kite that my friend Jen made for a MOPS meeting. It goes well with our current Pooh theme (that's real Pooh, not Disney Pooh). After I hung it up Becca said that she had wanted a kite hung up in her room for so long. It definitely adds some fun and brightness to the room.

The tail

Finally, I hung up the Pooh pictures we bought on eBay. For those who care, the first one is of Pooh doing his stoutness exercises. The second is of Tigger and Roo stuck up in a pine tree just as Piglet and Pooh find them. The two small ones are of Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Pooh playing Pooh Sticks and of Pooh holding onto his blue balloon in order to get to the honey up in the tree. We have some more large ones, but they aren't framed yet.

Becca's first person drawing

Below is a drawing Becca did at Nate's parents just a few days ago. I was so excited when she showed it to me because it's the first time I've seen a recognizable person in her drawings. Mostly it's been circles and scribbles, though lately she has been teaching herself to draw some of the letters of the alphabet.

Anyway, I haven't been showing her how to draw "real-looking" people, since I was trying to let her develop in her own time, and she did!

For the sake of allowing me to remember how she described it, here is a paraphrased description of the drawing below. The three dots are the eyes and nose. Above them the first line is the eyelids and the line above it is the forehead. The zigzag lines above that is the hair. The two long lines below the nose are the legs (yes, inside the head) and the dots at the bottom of the legs are the "little tiny feet". On either side of the legs the small lines are the cheeks.

And for the part that made us laugh, Becca drew another picture for Mima, and explained it to her. In that picture, she made sure to point out the butt, located at the bottom of the head. :)
